A captivating and intense story of the agony and frustration of a graduate student trying to make it through Harvard Law School. His problems are compounded when he falls in love with the divorced daughter of a demanding and cynical law professor. Bottoms is the student, and Wagner is the woman. Most of the performances are outstanding, and there are some realistic moments of classroom tension and humiliation. Houseman is exceptionally convincing as the tyrannical law professor. Well-done supporting roles by Wagner and James Naughton. Also with Graham Beckel and Edward Herrmann. Academy Award--Houseman, best supporting actor; James Bridges, best screenplay (based on material from another medium). 111 minutes
