MOVIES ON VIDEO

February 19, 1993

These films are now available on videocassette: A League of Their Own (1992; Columbia TriStar; 126 minutes; closed captioned; no suggested retail price) This recreates the brief life of the All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League, founded in 1943, when it appeared all the male pro baseball players might be going off to war. Geena Davis and Lori Petty star as sisters and rivals, and Tom Hanks is the alcoholic has-been who makes his comeback as their coach. Rated PG. (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) (Roger Ebert)
South Central (1992; Warner; 99 minutes; closed captioned; $92.99) A young gang member (Glenn Plummer) spends much of his life in jail for crimes committed for a gang leader who is essentially using him. But after 10 years behind bars, Plummer emerges to find his own son now in the same gang that has destroyed his life - and he is determined to break the cycle of crime and violence. A strong story, filmed with passion. Rated R. (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) (Roger Ebert) One Against the Wind (1991; Republic; 96 minutes; closed captioned; $89.98) As the headstrong, courageous, argumentative and supremely intelligent Mary Lindell, a patriotic Brit who served as a Red Cross nurse and married a French count, Australian actress Judy Davis humanizes a fascinating historical figure who won medals for valor above and beyond the call of duty in World War I and II. With Sam Neill, Christien Anholt, Denholm Elliott. Exciting and moving. Rated PG. (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)(STAR) (Lon Grahnke) Switched at Birth (1991; Columbia TriStar; 192 minutes; no suggested retail price) Based on the true story of Florida mother Regina Twig. With her husband, she tracked down their child, who was switched at birth in the hospital, and tried to win custody from Bob Mays, the young widower who raised her and considered himself her father. This production takes a scrupulously even-handed approach, giving both families equal time to play out their tragedies. But it never really explains a crucial question. Why would a woman who seems as loving and sensitive as Twig intrude so selfishly into another family's life? Bonnie Bedelia, Brian Kerwin, Ed Asner. Rated PG. (STAR)(STAR) 1/2 (Ginny Holbert) Treacherous Crossing (1992; Paramount; 88 minutes; closed captioned; no suggested retail price) A honeymoon voyage becomes a Hitchcock-style ordeal for a jittery heiress (Lindsay Wagner) in this so-so psychological thriller. With Angie Dickinson. No MPAA rating. (STAR)(STAR) (Lon Grahnke)
