USA breathes new life into 'Bionic Woman'

23 Aug 2002

Jaime Sommers, the first female cyborg, is ready for a 21st century makeover.

USA Network is developing a remake of the 1976-78 series "The Bionic Woman."

The cable channel, which is garnering big ratings for its new drama series "The Dead Zone" and "Monk," hopes to repeat that success next summer.

The original "Bionic Woman," which ran on ABC for a season and on NBC for two seasons, was a spinoff from "The Six Million Dollar Man." Lindsay Wagner played the former fiancee of Steve Austin (Lee Majors). After a skydiving accident, Sommers was bionically reconstructed. The operation gave her superhuman powers, which she used on government missions. As in the original series, the new Sommers will be tall, athletic, blond and blue-eyed.

Like "Monk," which is getting a second run on ABC, there is a possibility for the new "Bionic Woman" series to get a second window on a broadcast network.
