THE HELLO FRIEND/ENNIS COSBY FOUNDATION
Drs. Wiilam H. and Camille O. Cosby established the Hello friend/Ennis Cosby Foundation to fulfill the goals and dreams of their son. Ennis common greeting, "Hello Friend," inspired the name of the foundation. The inspiration for the foundation's logo, which incorporates the sun and moon, was provide by two of Ennis' sisters. Erika and Ensa. Ennis frequently told his four sisters to look toward the sun and moon and think of him. It was his way of saying that he was watching over them, day and night.
The foundation was formed in early 1997 as a public, non - profit organization. It is dedicated to:
1 being a friend to all people with dyslexia and language-based learning difference;
2 recognizing and celebrating their gifts;
3 opening the doors of learning to them; and
4 helping them to reach their full potential.
The foundation promotes early recognition, compassionate understanding and effective education.
The foundation has just finished production of a 50 - minute documentary entitled Ennis' Gift: A Film About Learning Differences. Hosted by Ed Bradley, the film includes actors Danny Glover, James Earl Jones, Lindsay Wagner and Henry Winkler; business leader Charles Schwab; Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner; MacArthur genius award winning paleontologist Jack Horner; polar explorer Ann Bancroft; and Bill Cosby's brother Russell along with children, educators and others whose voices together tell the story of their common experiences, and share a vision of hope and possibility. Josh Seftel, producer and director, is dyslexic, and he brought his own passion and originality to the project. The film may be ordered by calling (800) 343-5540.
The foundation has also initiated the Ennis William Cosby Graduate Certificate Program, to begin this fall at Fordham University. This program will provide scholarship to teachers (kindergarten through second grade) to take a sequence of six graduate courses focusing on how to provide all children with effective teaching in the mainstream classroom. Drs. Johanna Uhry and Margaret Jo Shepherd, two of Ennis' professors at Columbia, will respectively direct and advise the program. The foundation takes great joy in the opportunity to provide scholarships for New York City teachers to have the kind of professional development and learning experiences that excited Ennis so much as a graduate student.
Russell Cosby, Ennis' uncle and foundation director, and Carolyn Olivier, education director, have continued their public awareness efforts in a series of speaking engagements around the country, addressing parents, teachers, administrators and children with learning differences.
A key part of the Foundation's work is fundraising to support these important efforts. The foundation held its inaugural Los Angeles fundraiser in November 1999. In addition, the foundation continues to receive support from the proceeds of the annual Cube Checkers Challenge, hosted this year by Target stores. Most of the foundation's support came from individual contributors at all levels who believe in the power of Ennis' mission. The Hello Friend/Ennis William Cosby Foundation is a tax exempt, publicly supported charitable organization as described in Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
