The United Nations Association San Diego Chapter (UNA-SD), announced today that they will present their first ever UNA Global Corporate Citizenship Award to QUALCOMM Incorporated for its commitment to high ethical standards, as well as global and community responsibility, at San Diego's annual United Nations Day gala event, "Year of the Woman," on Friday, October 15, 2004. The event is from 6 to 10:30 PM at the La Jolla Hyatt Regency Hotel and will celebrate the 59th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, and the San Diego Chapter's 58th anniversary. Additional awards are also being presented to Assembly Member Christine Kehoe, Emmy-nominated designers of Jeran Design, and Dr. Dee Aker from the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. UNA-SD's past awards have included organizations and individuals such as educators, politicians, and humanitarians. Other event features include unique artistic global projects that contribute to "Year of the Woman" and the HIV/AIDS event focus.

"QUALCOMM is honored to be chosen for the Global Corporate Citizenship Award by UNA San Diego," said Dr. Daniel L. Sullivan, executive vice president of human resources. "It's rewarding to be acknowledged for the role we play in our communities, a role that we embrace with dedication and enthusiasm."

QUALCOMM's corporate giving and employee volunteer programs are based on respect for community organizations, cooperative leadership development and philanthropic creativity. The Global Corporate Citizenship award recognizes a local company or organization that has invested and contributed locally and around the world addressing a multitude of global problems and building ongoing community relations in a socially responsible way.

The 2004 UN Day anniversary celebration is under the auspices of the UNAIDS initiative, the Global Coalition on Women and Aids, based in Geneva, Switzerland. Proceeds will benefit UNA-SD's educational programs, the US fund for UNICEF, and three HIV/AIDS organizations, Christie's Place, Mama's Kitchen, and the Power of Love Foundation that work to distribute funds, nutritious food, and education to affected communities. The San Diego Chapter of UNA-USA is inspired by this year's UN Day theme, "Year of the Woman," and our special focus on furthering AIDS awareness and prevention, an important part of the work of the United Nations.

UNA San Diego Chapter feels it is very important to highlight companies such as QUALCOMM for their tremendous dedication toward the advancement of women's equity and their leadership and commitment toward many global issues. "The active and socially responsible role that QUALCOMM and its employees play in our local and global community is at the heart of our Chapter's efforts. It is this very kind of leadership from the business community that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan calls upon to help make a difference in this world," says Katharine Kubichan, UN Day Chairperson.

The event theme "Year of the Woman" highlights locally and internationally the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and children, and projects that raise AIDS awareness around the globe. Actress Lindsay Wagner will feature the glamorous Hollywood Graffiti AIDS Gown by Jeran Design, and the inspiring UNESCO Art Miles Mural Project, a worldwide effort of painting murals for global harmony, will feature a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor for her contributions to AIDS research.

UNA-SD is a non-profit, non-government, non-partisan organization dedicated to increasing public understanding and support for the United Nations. UNA-SD has held its UN Day event for over five decades and runs numerous educational outreach programs in the community, 100 run by volunteers.
