Bird Gardens Hosts Dog, Cat Adoptions

11 Nov 2009

On Saturday, dogs and cats will take over BG Bird Gardens.

Loving All Animals Inc., a year-old organization that aims to help various animal welfare organizations, will host its first major super pet adoption fair at the Palm Desert garden estate.

“It's going to be wonderful,” said Lindi Biggi, president of Loving All Animals Inc. “Seven different animal welfare organizations — instead of being competitors, they are being comrades.”

Actress Lindsay Wagner will lend her support with an appearance at the event, organizers said.

The grounds are normally filled with Biggi's 50 kinds of exotic birds. But on Saturday, they will stay in the Biggi home, leaving room for 100 homeless dogs and cats.

The goal of the adoption fair is a simple one, Biggi said: Bring animals at risk of being euthanized face-to-face with potential adopters.

“We have to get the people here to put the animals in their loving arms,” Biggi said. “That's my plea. Anyone with room in their heart and their home, please come.”

They plan to set up a “get acquainted” area where those interested in adopting and the cats and dogs can get to know each other, said Tracey Essex, executive director of Loving All Animals.

There will also be a pet boutique with vendors, entertainment and refreshments, Biggi said.

Low-cost microchipping will also be offered to any companion pet, Biggi said.

Despite the tough economic times, more than 50 sponsors, friends, family and businesses have made come forward to make the event happen, much to the pleasant surprise of Biggi and Essex.

“We have raised more than $15,000 for the event,” Essex said.

The women hope this will be the beginning of an annual event.
