Hollywood star lights up charity

6 Dec 2008

THOUSANDS of twinkling Christmas lights have been switched on in celebrations across Teesside - with some "bionic" help.

Norton-based charity Daisy Chain had its own Hollywood superstar to perform the big switch on.

Bionic Woman actress Lindsay Wagner turned on the magical display which lit up the whole of the Daisy Chain garden at Calf Fallow Farm with tens of thousands of festive bulbs, pictured above Hollywood actress Lindsay Wagner turns on the Christmas lights at Daisy Chain.

The award-winning actress, best known for playing Jaime Sommers in the series The Bionic Woman, said: "I'm very impressed with the lights. I was surprised to see some of them moving."

The lights covered the farmhouse and the barn and revealed a field of 3D moving reindeer before winding through the gardens to illuminate Santa's grotto and a miniature railway.

Ms Wagner is on Teesside conducting a series of workshops for carers and siblings of children with special needs. Daisy Chain - which works with families who have children with autism - was delighted to welcome her to the farm where a similar support group operates. She said: "I'm just thrilled that this exists and that they take into consideration the whole family's needs."

The lights will be lit every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until Christmas to raise funds for Daisy Chain through sales of refreshments and Santa suits.

The Traditional Christmas Fair in John Whitehead Park included performances by Northfield School Band, Priorsmill School Choir and the Starstruck drama group from Billingham Forum.

All donations collected from the fair yesterday evening will be presented to the Butterwick Hospice. Mary Butterwick, founder of the Stockton-based hospice, had the honour of lighting up the huge Christmas tree.
